Starting Step by Step: My First Small Business and the Journey Behind It

Starting my very first small business has been one of the scariest, most exciting, and most meaningful things I’ve ever done. Step by Step wasn’t just a random idea, it was something that grew slowly out of my own life, my experiences, my mental health, and the little moments that kept me going. 

I’ve always loved socks. Not in a loud or flashy way, but in the quiet, comforting kind of way you don’t really notice until you sit with it. Living in New York City means you’re always on your feet, always on the move, always trying to keep up. And through it all, socks were the first thing I put on before facing the city, the day, the commute, the chaos. They were warmth during cold nights, comfort after exhausting shifts, and a tiny reminder that even small things matter.

When I started dreaming about creating my own brand, I didn’t picture something huge or complicated. I pictured messages. Little uplifting reminders that when you look down. Words that meet you where you are, whether you’re getting ready for work, starting a project, or just trying to stay motivated when life feels too heavy.

The concept for Step by Step came from that space.
From wanting to create something gentle.
From wanting to make socks feel like a friend.
From wanting to give myself and anyone who needs it a reminder that they’re still moving, still growing, still trying.

The behind-the-scenes has been a whole journey on its own. From sketching designs to testing colors, to figuring out how social media works as a brand, to writing captions that feel authentic. It’s been learning how to tell my story, how to share positivity without sounding forced, and how to create designs that feel like me, simple, real, and rooted in encouragement.

Some days, I feel confident and inspired. Other days, I feel overwhelmed and second-guess everything. But that’s the truth behind starting something from scratch. You don’t have all the answers. You just take one step. Then another. And eventually, the path starts forming beneath your feet.

Step by Step isn’t just a sock brand.
It’s my reminder that building something meaningful doesn’t have to happen all at once.
It’s about small wins, small ideas, small acts of courage that add up over time.
